| JUNE 2012 |
| JULY 2012 July 13, 14 and 15, Artemis will teach two workshops at Studio Artemis, Maryland. One is on stagecraft and the other one is on American Cabaret aka Vintage Orientale. The Stagecraft Workshop is Friday
7:00 – 10:00 and Saturday 12:00 - 7:30 (with a 1/2
hour break). Regardless of your style of dance, this
workshop is perfect for every performer. Subjects will
include: commanding your space, smooth transitions,
keeping it interesting, accessing your vocabulary in
the heat of the moment, deciding when to use which
step, how to analyze a song, understanding the music,
floor patterns, dancing for the camera, dealing with
distractions, beautiful arms and hands, where the 8s
are and improvisational skills. The cost will be $180.
The Sunday workshop is from 12:00 –
4:00 and the subject is American Cabaret AKA Vintage Orientale.
This is the exciting dance that made America fall in
love with belly dance and it is making a big comeback.
“Vintage Orientale” is a more accurate name for this
vivacious and legitimate style of belly dance. It is
commonly referred to as "American Cabaret" but there
is very little about it that is American except for
the pazzazz and some of the dramatic elements. It is
made up of Middle Eastern dances and combines Pan
Arabic and Turkish techniques to many different forms
of Arabic, Turkish and Greek music. It includes a 5 to
8 part show, many props, extended veil work, floor
work, audience participation and more. This workshop
will teach you about the history of Vintage Orientale
dance and the multi part show concept, the elements of
a typical show, lots of steps that typify this style
of dance and some great video footage. Cost is $80. Contact Artemis at artemisdances@yahoo.com
to sign up for either or both workshops.
