Atesh's Five Big
Reasons
Why SCA Dancers (of
Mid-eastern persuasion)
Should Take Mundane
Dance Classes.
(...if you're not Scadian,
you may have trouble reading this page!)
-
Authenticity (ie. what's Persian
vs. Tunisian vs. Egyptian etc.)
-
Knowledge (keep abreast of cultural
events or workshops relevant to your persona)
-
Networking (make new friends
who may share your interests)
-
Resources (where to go for music,
costuming, accessories)
-
Technique (basic fundamentals
like posture, grace)
If it's important to you to research and learn
about your persona's history and culture,
surely it's also important to learn about the
art of dance.
It's not something you can easily do by yourself
- learn from "those who have gone before"
and smoothed the way for your progress.
Some excuses not to take dance class,
refuted!
-
the teacher doesn't do SCA or Renn
Fairs...
-But the teacher does know how to
dance, and that's what you want to learn, right? She can tell you what
type of steps are most likely to be historically accurate, and help you
learn to dance with props or finger cymbals.
-
the teacher's teaching a dance I
don't want to learn...
-But you can take those steps and
combinations from the choreography and use them in your own dance!
-
she only teaches 'cabaret-style'...
-Which involves finger cymbals,
stage presence, relating to the audience and/or the musicians; and perhaps
other skills like dance composition, choreographing, and more.
It's up to you - be the best
you can be!!!
